Avatar adoption and platform scale
Meta Avatars has passed a major creation milestone: more than 1 billion avatars have been created across Meta’s technologies. This is a cumulative figure, so it measures total creation activity rather than the number of currently active or unique people.
Roblox provides a large, more time-specific view of avatar activity. Its 2023 annual report recorded 68.4 million average daily active users across more than 190 countries. In the first three quarters of 2023, Roblox users made 165 billion avatar updates, an increase of 38% year over year. They also bought nearly 1.6 billion digital fashion items and accessories, up 15% year over year.
Roblox’s later financial results show the scale of the surrounding platform in 2024:
| Roblox measure | Reported figure | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Average daily active users | 82.9 million | Full year 2024 |
| Hours engaged | 73.5 billion | Full year 2024 |
| Revenue | $3.602 billion | Full year 2024 |
| Bookings | $4.3691 billion | Full year 2024 |
| Average daily active users | 85.3 million | Q4 2024 |
| Hours engaged | 18.7 billion | Q4 2024 |
| Revenue | $988.2 million | Q4 2024 |
| Bookings | $1.3616 billion | Q4 2024 |
Roblox’s Q4 2024 average monthly unique payers were 18.9 million. Average bookings per monthly unique payer were $23.97, while average bookings per daily active user were $15.97. These are platform monetization measures, not prices for individual avatar items.
Other platforms report substantial communities as well. ZEPETO says it has 300 million users worldwide, 2.3 million Studio creators, and 68 million Studio item sales. Ready Player Me says it is trusted by more than 25,000 developers, while a separate Ready Player Me developer rewards source says it served more than 4,000 developers over the last 10 years. Because these figures come from platform statements with different definitions and periods, they should not be added together.
Digital fashion and self-expression
Roblox’s Digital Expression Report 2023 measured how Gen Z respondents relate avatar styling to physical-world presentation. Fifty-six percent said styling their avatar is more important than styling themselves in the physical world. Among older Gen Z respondents aged 22 to 26, the figure was 64% for dressing up an avatar being more important than dressing up in the physical world.
Digital fashion was at least somewhat important to 84% of Gen Z respondents. The importance of digital fashion had grown at least somewhat over the previous year for 85%, including 53% who said it had grown a lot.
The influence also moved in the other direction. Eighty-four percent of surveyed respondents said their physical style is at least somewhat inspired by their avatar’s style. Fifty-four percent said they are very or extremely inspired by what their avatar and other avatars wear. In a separate Roblox SIGGRAPH 2024 source, 88% of Gen Z respondents said metaverse-like worlds such as Roblox likely helped them express themselves better in real life.
These survey results describe respondents’ attitudes, not universal behavior. They nonetheless point to a design pattern: avatar clothing can function as experimentation, social signaling, and a source of inspiration for physical styling.
Meta’s commercial avatar-fashion milestones show how that pattern has been packaged. Meta launched the Avatars Store in 2022 with three initial paid fashion brands: Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne. Meta added seven PUMA outfits in 2023. It later added six Valentino outfits and one pair of Valentino Garavani VLogo Signature earrings.
Avatar creation tools and creator economies
Roblox said its avatar technology stack includes two avatar stacks: the legacy R6 system and the newer R15 system. It also said more than 65 million daily users should have an avatar that truly represents them. That ambition creates a production challenge when large numbers of users want distinctive, wearable, and technically compatible designs.
Roblox announced Avatar Auto Setup as a tool that can rig, cage, segment, and skin 3D models in one click. Roblox said the tool reduced avatar creation work from days to minutes. The claim describes a workflow improvement stated by Roblox; it is not a measured average for every creator or asset.
Opening creation tools also affected item production. Roblox said creators made 22% more 3D avatar items after creation was opened up in April 2024. Its creator-economy reporting said more than 7,500 of its 5.5 million U.S. creator accounts monetizing on Roblox earned more than $650 in the past year. Roblox also said approximately 20,000 creators were in its Developer Exchange program in 2024, and that the median DevEx creator received $1,645 during the 12 months ended June 30, 2024.
Roblox’s 2024 cash-flow figures show the financial scale of the company around this ecosystem. Full-year operating cash flow was $822.3 million, up 79% year over year, and free cash flow was $641.3 million, up 417% year over year. In Q4 2024, operating cash flow was $184.5 million, up 29% year over year, while free cash flow was $120.6 million, up 54% year over year. These company-level figures are not creator payouts.
Campaigns, marketplaces, and ownership
Ready Player Me’s adidas Ozworld case study gives several campaign-specific avatar statistics. The campaign generated 10 million unique avatar combinations. It created more than 428,000 avatars in its first 10 days, and users redeemed more than 18,000 Ozworld avatars on Ready Player Me Hub. The three figures describe different stages or actions in the campaign and should not be treated as interchangeable counts.
Decentraland reports a defined split for creator earnings: creators keep 97.5% of their earnings, while 2.5% is reinvested into the community through the DAO. Its login documentation says a Decentraland NAME grants 100 Voting Power. Voting Power is a governance measure, not a statement about the market value of a name or avatar.
The distribution of value matters for avatar designers deciding where to publish work. A platform may emphasize audience scale, creation tools, item sales, or creator retention. The available figures show all four dimensions, but they use different denominators: users, items, developers, earnings, and governance units. Comparing them requires keeping those units separate.
Performance limits for VRChat avatars
VRChat publishes explicit performance-rank limits for PC avatars. The default minimum displayed performance rank on PC is Very Poor, while the default Avatar Performance Rank Block on mobile is Medium. The rank system makes technical constraints visible to creators and users.
The following caps apply to VRChat PC avatars at the Excellent, Good, Medium, and Poor ranks respectively:
| Avatar component | Excellent | Good | Medium | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trail Renderers | 1 | 2 | 4 | 8 |
| Line Renderers | 1 | 2 | 4 | 8 |
| Raycasts | 1 | 4 | 8 | 15 |
| Cloths | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Total Cloth Vertices | 0 | 50 | 100 | 200 |
| Physics Colliders | 0 | 1 | 8 | 8 |
| Physics Rigidbodies | 0 | 1 | 8 | 8 |
| Audio Sources | 1 | 4 | 8 | 8 |
Several patterns stand out in the limits. Trail Renderers and Line Renderers rise from 1 at Excellent to 8 at Poor. Raycasts range from 1 to 15. Excellent avatars allow zero Cloths, zero Total Cloth Vertices, zero Physics Colliders, and zero Physics Rigidbodies under these listed caps. Audio Sources range from 1 at Excellent to 8 at Medium and Poor.
For avatar design, these numbers turn visual ambition into a resource budget. Cloth simulation, physics, renderers, and audio each consume part of that budget, and the permitted count depends on the target performance rank.
Snapchat lenses and Bitmoji fashion
Snap’s Q4 2024 daily active users were 453 million, up 9% year over year. In 2024, nearly 113 million Snapchatters globally experienced a Sponsored beauty Lens at least once. Snapchatters also viewed over 262 million hours of beauty content on Spotlight globally during 2024.
Snap reported engagement differences for specific beauty try-ons in its sample: lipstick try-ons drove 16% higher playtime in the United States, while eyeliner try-ons drove 14% higher playtime. These percentages describe the reported sample and should not be generalized to every Lens or market.
Snap’s 2024 in a Snap source also identified five named top purchasable Bitmoji fashion garments, led by Baggy Sweatpants and Baggy Skater Jorts. The source gives the number of named items and their leading examples, but not a sales count for each garment.
Together, Snapchat’s figures connect avatar-like expression with augmented-reality beauty, short-form content, and purchasable digital clothing. The reported audience and engagement measures are global in the cases specified, while the lipstick and eyeliner comparison is explicitly from a U.S. sample.
